My name is Amanda Lewer and I have been an Equestrian Coach and Horse Trainer for over 22 years. In that time I have carved my own training methods helping thousands of horse riders to improve their horse riding positions, feel and balance. My horse training methods have been developed over years of re-training horses with behavioural issues usually associated with pain or fear. Using simple, uncomplicated methods based on my ever growing knowledge of equine behaviour and biomechanics I have assisted 100’s of horse’s develop a willing attitude towards their work and locate the primary reasons as to why they had begun behaving poorly in the first place. I have a belief that horses become uncooperative for three reasons. 1)They are in pain, 2)They are in fear or 3)They suffer memory pain.
I would describe myself as a “Foundational Coach.” I try to bridge the gap between Natural Horsemanship and competing in the Performance Horse realm. If you are struggling to progress from training into competition, then I can help you with that! If you feel as a competitive rider there is something missing and you need to revisit your foundations to improve your performance, then I can help you with that too. Check out the testimonials from my clients on how I have helped them. Having started many horses from the breaking in process through to their first outings I have a “tool box” of methods to coach you through the same process.
A lot of coaches and riders believe “feel” can’t be taught. Most experienced trainers and riders say “You either have it or you don’t!” I think this way of thinking is incorrect and out of date. I was a very unnatural jumps rider as I had very poor eyesight. I couldn’t “see” a distance to a fence. I trained in an era when “seeing a spot” was everything. It wasn’t until I sought help from an old World Cup show jumper that my ability to ‘feel’ and improve my jumping really improved. This particular coach went to an extreme measure, with complete trust in my stoic little Thoroughbred. The coach put a 1.55m open vertical up that was half way down the long-side of the arena. Then he made me close my eyes and “coached” me through the turn, onto the line and over the jump. “Canter, canter, canter…” I can still hear Gregs voice in my head to this day. He taught me about quality of pace and the true connection that keeps the horse up in front of your leg. I very rarely had a rail in a showjumping course ever again. This experience proved to me that “feel” CAN be taught!!
After running a successful Jump Club I was asked to coach poles classes for riders who didn’t want to jump. I was reluctant to set up boring straight lines of four poles, so I set small patterns up that required the riders to move, wait, turn and move in order to execute the pattern. What I stumbled on was a method of coaching that caused the riders aids to come together, the timing of their aids and the pressure they used with those aids, to rapidly improve. I was effectively coaching the riders how to improve their “feel”. My poles patterns developed a lot more and not only improved the equestrian’s skill set, they provided a cross-training fitness exercise for the horses. Each pattern provides different levels of technicality and intensity that can be scaled up or down to suit the individual horse and rider combination. From this my first App was born. This App is simply called AML Equestrian Coaching and it contains 18 poles patterns with 2 jumping patterns. You can download this App here..
One of my biggest struggles is reaching all the people who ask for my help. Unfortunately I cannot split myself in multiple directions so I have developed an interactive coaching App called AML Horse & Rider Training. Here you will have access to video tutorials on my training techniques, topics I’m most commonly asked about and goal specific training routines to help you build your horses strength and fitness. You can also download the AML Six Week Rider Balance Challenge (directly from the app) which has been incredibly effective, especially for riders who live remotely. Users can track their training so they can look back on how they have progressed, load photo’s and contact me directly through the app for assistance. As I will be constantly adding new content to the App I welcome suggestions from my horse riders on what they would like me to add to help them. This App is FOR YOU… for my riders! Tell me what you need help with and and I’ll add it to the App. You can download the AML Horse & Rider Training App here… (Available on Google Play soon).
